The local organising committee has planned a Meeting that will have international, world-renowned plenary speakers, respected Australian and New Zealand speakers, proffered paper and posters presentations on a wide range of topics.
On Thursday, 13 September 2007, Skills Day will be held - a valuable opportunity to learn, hands on, up close and personal with our speakers.

Associate Professor Torben Lorentzen
Associate Professor Torben Lorentzen graduated from Copenhagen University, Denmark, in 1985. Since 1990, he has been actively involved in various aspects of ultrasound mainly Doppler imaging and Interventional Ultrasound (biopsy, drainage and tissue ablation).
He has published more than 40 papers and presented more than 100 lectures at national or international causes or congresses of Radiology. He is a reviewer for European Journal of Ultrasound and ACTA Radiologica.
Dr Carlo Martinoli
Dr Carlo Martinoli is Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Genoa, Italy. Since 1989, his practice involved musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI. Dr Martinoli has held 156 lectures as invited speaker at international Courses or Congresses of Radiology. He has written or co-authored 102 articles on international medical journals in which manuscript decisions are based on peer review. He is chairman of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology for Ultrasound.
Dr Eugene McNally
Dr Eugene McNally is Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Oxford Radcliff e Hospitals and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford.
He graduated from the medical school of University College Dublin in 1983 and trained in Radiology at Northwick Park Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London. He joined the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre Oxford in 1993 and was appointed Director of Musculoskeletal Radiology in 2001.
Dr McNally's special interests are the clinical application of musculoskeletal MRI and ultrasound. He has published over 50 articles in the medical literature, 10 book chapters and one book Practical Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. He has given over 200 invited lectures in international meetings in the last 10 years, including two previous visits to RANZCR in 1999 and 2006.

Dr David Nyberg
Dr Nyberg was raised in Oregon, went to Stanford University for undergraduate degree, then the University of Oregon for Medical School, followed by internship in Phoenix and residency training in radiology at University of California, San Francisco. It was there that David started to develop an interest in ultrasound and wrote his first papers on early pregnancy and pregnancy complications. Upon completion of fellowship in ultrasound and body imaging, David returned to join the faculty at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
David Nyberg's interest in the use of ultrasound for detection of fetal abnormalities lead to his first textbook on fetal abnormalities whilst at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle where he was the principal investigator there for the FASTER trial. In 2002, he established The Fetal & Women's Center in Scottsdale / Phoenix. David has been active in a variety of societies, primarily the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology which he serves as Treasurer.
Dr Joseph Polak
Dr Polak is Professor of Radiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief of Radiology at New England Medical Center and Director of the Ultrasound Reading Center in Boston MA. Dr Polak has co-authored more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and more than 80 chapters and miscellaneous articles.
He is also the author of a textbook in Vascular Ultrasound. His primary research interest is in the application of ultrasound imaging in vascular diseases. His current research focus is in the use of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) as a measure of early atherosclerosis and the application as a clinical tool.
Dr Thomas Stavros
Dr Stavros has been the Chief of Ultrasound and Non-Invasive Vascular Services with Radiology Imaging Associates, Medical Imaging of Colorado and Swedish Medical Centre since 1979.
Dr Stavros has been involved in mammography since joining RIA in 1976, and has been actively involved in the development of high-frequency hand-held breast ultrasound since 1981. He lectures extensively on breast ultrasound and has recently completed a textbook on breast ultrasound. He is a reviewer for several radiology journals.
Dr Stavros is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, a Fellow of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology, where he was the Baker Professor in 1999.

Professor Yves Ville
Dr Yves Ville is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Université Paris, France. He is well known for his expertise in twin pregnancy, particularly in the area of monochorionic twins and twintwin transfusion. He is a Board member of International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Editor-in-Chief of "Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology".
Professor David Evans
Professor Evans is a Chartered Physicist, obtaining his PhD in Medical Physics University of Leicester,1979 and DSc from University of Surry, 2001, for his contribution to Doppler ultrasound in medicine. He is Chair of Medical Physics at the University of Leicester and is Honorary Consultant at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, heading the Department of Medical Physics.
Professor Evans is the principal co-author of two text books on Doppler ultrasound and has published substantially with over 180 peer reviewed papers, over 12 book chapters and numerous conference proceedings. He has taught ultrasound courses in UK, South America and Portugal and lectured in 19 diff erent overseas countries. He has been editor of the "Journal of Clinical Ultrasound", 1993-6, President of The British Medical Ultrasound Society, 1996-8 and is currently President of European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
Mr Richard Allan
Richard Allan is the Head Sonographer, Division of Medical Imaging at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.
He has over 20 years experience in ultrasound working in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia. Prior to moving to Australia in 2002 he was the Charge Sonographer at Christchurch Women's Hospital and Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch, New Zealand.
His current interests in ultrasound include the Doppler assessment of the liver vasculature, chronic liver disease and transplantation, acute abdominal pain and assessment of foetal anomalies.
Richard has co-authored a number of papers on a variety of topics including liver Doppler, gallbladder disease, fetal renal anomalies and neonatal neurosonography. He has previously presented at state, national and international meetings.
Richard is a past president of the Ultrasonographers Group of ASUM and is a past chairman of the New Zealand Branch of ASUM.
Dr Matthew Andrews
ASUM President (2006 - 2008)
Dr Matthew Andrews is a radiologist working in private practice, with a special interest in ultrasound. He trained in radiology at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne and undertook an abdominal imaging fellowship and University of California, Davis.
He has been a Councillor of both the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists and the Australasian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine for several years and is the ASUM President for 2006 to 2008. Matthew has served on many ultrasound committees covering issues such as ultrasound training and credentialing, quality use of diagnostic imaging, professional supervision, accreditation and subspecialties such as musculoskeletal and obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound.
He has also lectured on ultrasound on behalf of ASUM and the University of Melbourne to radiology and other registrars and sonographers for many years. In 2003 he was the ASUM Kohlenberg travelling Fellow.
Mr Stephen Bird
Stephen Bird is currently employed as the Charge Sonographer at Benson Radiology in Adelaide. Stephen began sonography in 1990, holds a General and a Vascular DMU and a Masters of Medical Sonography from the University of South Australia. He is currently a member of the ASUM Federal Council and Chairman of the DMU Board of Examiners. Previously he has been Chairman of the ASAR, an ASA Federal Council member and recipient of the 2002 ASA Sonographer Achievement Award.
Associate Professor Shane Brun
Associate Professor Shane Brun specialises in musculoskeletal medicine at the School of Medicine, James Cook University Queensland. He is a practising Sports Doctor and currently holds medical appointments with the Australian Institute of Sport and Queensland Academy of Sport. Associate Professor Brun is Vice President of Sports Doctors Australia and on the Board of Directors of Sports Medicine Australia, Queensland Branch. He is currently one of the doctors for the Australian Soccer Teams, a FIFA International Medical Instructor and Anti-doping official. He has worked in the capacity of Sports Doctor both nationally and internationally with teams including the Australian Soccer team, Australian Cricket Team, Bangladesh Cricket Team, Australian Swimming Team Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Associate Professor Brun is the Regional Co-ordinator of general practice training and a senior instructor with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons EMST Program.
Professor Julie Campbell
Julie Campbell is a Senior Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Director of the Centre for Research in Vascular Biology at the University of Queensland, and Director of the Wesley Research Institute at the Wesley Hospital. Her major research interest over the last 30 years has been the cell biology of vascular smooth muscle in the normal artery wall and in diseased states such as atherosclerosis. Recently she developed a vascular conduit, grown in the peritoneal cavity, from autologus bone marrow-derived cells. In 1995 she was awarded the Welcome Australia Medal, a Centenary Medal in 2003, and in 2004 was named a 'Queensland Great'. In 2000 she was elected to the Australian Academy of Science and currently serves on its Council and Executive Committee, Finance Committee and is the Secretary for Education and Public Awareness. She was awarded an Order of Australia, Officer (AO) in the General Division in June 2006.
Associate Professor Robert Cincotta
Associate Professor Rob Cincotta graduated in medicine at the University of Melbourne. He completed training in Obstetrics in Melbourne where he commenced training in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He worked in London and then moved to Brisbane to work as a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and then became director of MFM at the Mater Mother's Hospital in 2002. In 2005 he established Queensland Ultrasound for Women. He major interests are in the fetoscopic management of Twin Twin transfusion syndrome, the management of complications of multiple pregnancies and prenatal diagnosis. He is a member of the MFM committee of the RANZCOG.
Ms Deb Coghlan
Ms Coghlan is a Senior Vascular Technologist, formally of the Camperdown Vascular Laboratory in Sydney, now residing in Brisbane and working for Queensland Vascular Diagnosis.
Deb has over 20 years experience in ultrasound and 17 years performing vascular studies and have a keen interest in education and training. Deb Coghlan is experienced in many areas such as upper and lower extremity disorders including TOS and AV fi stulas, chronic venous insufficiency and advanced abdominal imaging, including endoluminal stent and other grafts, kidney and other liver transplants, renal and mesenteric imaging as well as more common vascular studies.
Mr Brendan Cramp
Brendan Cramp is currently employed as the Managing Sonographer at Peninsula Vascular Diagnostics, where endovascular intervention and imaging is of particular importance. Brendan has obtained a Masters degree, General and Vascular ultrasound qualifications and has a real interest in vascular imaging. He has been involved in vascular ultrasound education throughout Brisbane, presenting a multitude of lectures and practical seminars for ASA, ASUM, QUT and various ultrasound manufacturers.
Associate Professor Hans Peter Dietz
Associate Professor Hans Peter Dietz graduated from Heidelberg University, Germany, in 1988, obtaining an MD in O/G ultrasound there in 1989. After emigrating to New Zealand in 1990, he arrived in Australia in 1997 and completed his FRANCOG training in 1998. Between 1999 and 2002, Dr Dietz undertook urogynaecology subspeciality training in Sydney and obtained a PhD with the University of New South Wales. Since 2004 he is Associate Professor in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Nepean Campus of the Western Clinical School, University of Sydney. His main research interests all involve ultrasound imaging of the pelvic floor. He is a member of the Editorial Board of 'Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology'.
Professor David A Ellwood
Professor David Ellwood is the Deputy Dean and Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at The Australian National University Medical School and Director of the Fetal Medicine Unit at The Canberra Hospital. He is a practicing obstetrician and certified subspecialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine who is interested in teaching and research in high risk obstetrics. He is the immediate past-President of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ), and the Vice-President of Women's Health Australia (WHA). He is also a member of the Advisory Faculty of Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO). He is a past Chair of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Committee of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), and the current Chair of the Research Assessment Sub-Committee that oversees research training for trainees. He has recently become the Editor-in-Chief of the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He is widely published and has research interests in prenatal diagnosis, prediction of adverse pregnancy outcome, postnatal depression and postnatal physical recovery.
Associate Professor Jon Hyett
Associate Professor Jon Hyett is a Staff Specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Queensland. He trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and subspecialised in Maternal and Fetal Medicine in the UK. His primary research interests are prenatal diagnosis in the first trimester of pregnancy and the management of twin pregnancies. He is involved with the Obstetric Ultrasound accreditation programs run by the Fetal Medicine Foundation and with the Nuchal Translucency Accreditation Program of RANZCR / RANZCOG.
Dr Susane Fraser
Dr Fraser has been a breast physician for the past 15 years, practising in Cairns, Far North Queensland. She is currently the Director of the Cairns Breast Clinic, a multidisciplinary private diagnostic service and is also the Clinical Director of Breastscreen Queensland Cairns service. She is Vice-President of the Australasian Society of Breast Physicians, FNQ Councillor on the AMAQ and President of the FNQ Lady Doctors Association.
Dr Robert Miller
Dr Robert Miller has been a practicing obstetrics and gynaecology for more than twenty years. A member of the Queensland Fertility Group since 2000, Dr Miller has a particular interest in the areas of general reproductive medicine and endoscopic surgery.
Mrs Michelle Pedretti
Michelle is currently a sonographer at Kalgoorlie Hospital , Western Australia. She has a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Imaging (CT & MRI), DMU and Masters of Applied Science In Medical Ultrasound. Michelle has been scanning since 1996, in a variety of centers throughout Perth and has been involved in training of both sonographers and medical staff. Ms Pedretti is an accredited Practical Examiner (General & Obstetric) for DMU and University of South Australia. She has been the WA ASUM branch secretary and a WA branch committee member for ASA. Michelle is currently a Councilor for ASUM and the ASUM representative on the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry Ltd (ASAR).
Dr Neil Simmons
Neil Simmons has been in private practice for 25 years and has been performing musculoskeletal ultrasound for 18 years. He has spoken at numerous national, state and regional conferences and conducted numerous workshops. He is author/ co-author of 4 published papers with another in print. He is a member of A.S.U.M. and A.M.S.I.G. One of his career highlights was performing MSKUS at the Sydney Olympics imaging department. He works solely at The Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Centre of Excellence at Tynte St in North Adelaide.
Dr Christina Steffen
Dr Christina Steffen is Director of Surgery at Cairns Base Hospital and has a combined practice in general and vascular surgery. The drainage area for Cairns Base Hospital includes Cairns District and surrounding regions from Cardwell in the south to Cape York and the Torres Strait, a mixture of urban, rural and remote localities in tropical North East Australia with a population of approximately 250,000. The surgical service includes a large Outreach component to outlying areas as far as Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.
Her area of special interest is the management of diabetic foot disease which is a commonly encountered problem in tropical North Queensland.
Dr Roxanne Wu
Roxanne Wu is a practicing vascular and general surgeon in Cairns with a special interest in complex venous disease and vascular access. She is a graduate of the University of Sydney and has practiced in Far North Queensland and PNG for twenty years.. Dr Wu has served on the Board of Vascular Surgery, and the Board of Calvary Hospital (Cairns), now Cairns Private Hospital.
